Define Anxiety Disorders

We at CHAANGE much prefer to describe the “Disorder” as a Condition we have when we’ve experience circumstances and events we know well are the causative factors that create our tendency for Severe Anxiety. For the same reason, we do not see Severe Anxiety as a “sickness”. We actually are quite normal, often bright individuals, who are naturally responding in anxious ways. We know those factors well.

Severe Anxiety is a general heading under which we find a number of terms which are sub-categories of anxiety conditions determined by symptoms, and describes the uncomfortable bodily sensations and frightening, negative thoughts you experience when imagining some future danger or misfortune. Categories of severe anxiety include generalized anxiety, social phobia, agoraphobia (with or without panic attacks) and post-trauma conditions. Agoraphobia, taken from the Greek word that translates as “fear of open spaces”, is used today by psychologists to mean the fear of having fearful feelings which sometimes leads to avoidance of certain situations or activities.

Our best wishes to you all,

I work mainly with adults and late adolescents, individually, in couples and in groups. The areas I specialize in are anxiety, sexual issues (individuals or couples), adults molested as children, emotional intimacy, communication, depression, self-awareness, and deep and lasting character change.

In my 35 years of practicing counseling and psychotherapy I've worked with a wide variety of people of different ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, religions, and those with physical challenges. I find it immensely rewarding to work with people who are actively seeking to resolve problems, gain inner peace and elevate their emotional, intellectual and physical wellbeing.

My approach is a mixture of many different types of therapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Gestalt Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Family Systems Therapy, Client Centered Therapy, and Sex Therapy and the so effective method of anxiety treatment offered by the CHAANGE program.

If you are within reach of Dr. Blackwell, do call him for excellent service. If not, call us at CHAANGE/LifeSkills for the Affilliate nearest you. (619) 795-8477

What is LifeSkills?

The CHAANGE© Family of Therapeutic Tools has developed an effective way to treat children suffering from severe anxiety. The LifeSkills© program was designed through the joint efforts of professionals from education, social work, family therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. It provides age appropriate materials for children from ages 6-15 years, and are designed for application by the parent(s), the CHAANGE© therapist, or both. We have found that older teens also can benefit from the CHAANGE program for adults.

Phase 1: Education assistance – New information that de-myths anxiety.
Phase 2: Cognitive assistance – Identifying and changing fearful, negative self talk.
Phase 3: Family systems assistance – Working with the family system and seeing the child’s symptoms in context.
Phase 4: Behavioral assistance – Teaching and encouraging new ways of behaving.

LifeSkills teaches new information that explains anxiety, helps the child form more positive attitudes and beliefs, instructs the family in ways to be constructive, and assists in the initiation and practice of new ways of behaving in order to overcome feared situations.
